Did you know that the most popular beverage in the world is coffee itself? It’s known that coffee dates back to the 15th century, but actually, its first appearance was found way earlier, around 850 CE in reports and legends of its first use.

Up to this day, the place where the first coffee was found remains a mystery. 

But there are a lot of stories and legends that support the Ethiopian origin of coffee, which was shortly exported to Yemen.

As we mentioned before, the 15th century was the first, “official” time of the appearance of these precious beans. And the story goes something like this.

Once upon a time, there was a goat herder, Kaldi, who was just taking care of his cattle on the land of the Ethiopian plateau. While the herd was grazing, he noticed the unusual behavior of his goats. They were jumping around and bleating more than usual as they drank a gallon of fuel.

It hadn’t been long since Kaldi had spotted a pile of berries on the ground fallen from a certain tree, alluding to the source of the excitement itself. Full of curiosity, the herdsman decides to try the mysterious berries himself, realizing that they are the source of energizing effects.

Kladi, who was living near the Abyssinian monastery, rushed to share his discovery with the monks. Their response was not at an enviable level, causing them not such a delight. 

The great brownish beans were called the “devil’s work”, which made the abbots toss them into the fire. The reaction that roasting beans caused with the aroma caught the monks’ attention.

They changed their minds, removed the berries from the fire, and attempted to preserve them in a jug filled with hot water.

They decided to drink this mysterious beverage of berries and discovered a lightning effect. The beans kept them awake through the long hours of evening prayer, which soon became a religious devotion. It was not so long when the experience was shared among the other monks at the monastery and shortly accepted as a beloved beverage

That is how the story of coffee, the energizing beans, began to spread step by step worldwide.

Yemen also has a myth or a few that claims the first appearance of coffee. One of them claims that the Moroccan Sufi mystic was the first one who discovered the effect of the berries. 

While traveling through Ethiopia, he noticed the unusual behavior of the birds. He noticed that the little birdies were feeding themselves on Bunn plants — berries and, upon trying them, experienced strange behavior – it resulted in the same energetic effect.

Another story of Yemen coffee’s origin also claims that coffee originated there. The discovery was made by Sheikh Omar, who was a doctor-priest and a follower of Sheikh Abou’l Hasan Schadheli from Mocha, Yemen.

According to ancient stories, Omar had the ability to cure sick people through his prayer. Because of his “powers”, he was shortly deported from Mecca to a desert cave. 

Living like a hermit, he didn’t have much choice of what he could eat. Omar found and tried some berries from some shrubbery, but they were too bitter. He tried to boil them to make them softer, which resulted perfectly.

Making an attractive brownish liquid, Omar decided to drink it and was pleasantly surprised. The liquid berries gave him energy and helped him survive for days. 

The story of the so-called “miracle drug” was traveling fast and reached Mecca on short notice. People were shocked and couldn’t believe what had happened. Omar was asked to return to Mecca and, because of the miracle he had made, they proclaimed him a saint.

You might have noticed that we mentioned the term Mocha, regarding the Sheik. Well, actually the term originally referred to the city of Mocha in Yemen.

The city was a major trade center of “Mocha”. They trade mocha coffee beans that are known for their distinctive flavor. 

Today it is one of the most popular types of coffee drunk all over the world.

Even though there is a lot of support for the stories that claim the origin of coffee in the eighth century, the first “real” writings and myths of the beloved beans date back to the fifteenth century.

The most common belief is that coffee originates in Ethiopia, which is soon exported to Yemen. At that moment it began the cultivation of coffee, trading it all over the world.
